Rivian software seemingly teased in Volkswagen Group's Scout Motors launch

Volkswagen’s Scout Motors took the wraps off its two new vehicles recently, to much acclaim from electric vehicle owners. But while the Scout Traveler SUV and Scout Terra pickup truck boasted classic exteriors that look very tough and aesthetically pleasing, the software of the two vehicles immediately caught the eye of EV enthusiasts. 

As could be seen in teaser images of the Scout Traveler and Terra, the vehicles’ software looks extremely similar to Rivian’s proprietary software. This could be seen in the infotainment displays of the Traveler and Terra, as well as the upcoming vehicles’ instrument clusters. It was then no surprise that EV fans on social media speculated that Scout’s Rivian-esque vehicle software might be the result of Rivian and Volkswagen’s joint venture. 

Back in July, Rivian and the Volkswagen Group announced that they intend to enter a joint venture to create next generation software-defined vehicle (SDV) platforms to be used in both companies’ future electric vehicles. In a press release, Rivian and the VW Group noted that the “joint venture is expected to build on Rivian’s industry-leading software and electrical architecture to create best-in-class software-defined vehicle technology platform.”

“Our customers benefit from the targeted partnership with Rivian to create a leading technology architecture. Through our cooperation, we will bring the best solutions to our vehicles faster and at lower cost. We are also acting in the best interest of our strong brands, which will inspire with their iconic products,” Volkswagen Group CEO Oliver Blume said. 

"Not only is this partnership expected to bring our software and associated zonal architecture to an even broader market through Volkswagen Group’s global reach, but this partnership also is expected to help secure our capital needs for substantial growth," Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe said.
