Rivian R1S Continues to Shine in California in Q3 2024: CNCDA
Rivian may be seeing challenges this year due to supplier issues, but the company’s all-electric SUV is still performing very well in California. This was, at least, according to a recent report from the California New Car Dealers Association (CNCDA).
As per the CNCDA’s report, which covered the registrations of BEVs and PHEVs in California until the end of the third quarter, the Rivian R1S was the state’s 9th-best-selling BEV/PHEV. From January to September 2024, the Rivian R1S saw 6,279 registrations.
Based on CNCDA data, Rivian saw 6,685 new vehicle registrations in the first nine months of 2023. This means that year-to-date, Rivian has seen a 35.4% increase in brand registrations year-over-year. This is a pretty remarkable feat considering that the R1S is a premium vehicle that’s sold at a premium price.
It should also be noted that with 6,279 registrations, the Rivian R1S commanded 23.3% of California’s large luxury SUV segment in the first nine months of 2024, electric or otherwise. Following the Rivian R1S were the Lexus TX, Cadillac Escalade, Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class, and the Land Rover Range Rover, which sold 3412, 2925, 2752, and 2713 units, respectively.
While the Rivian R1T faces a lot of direct competition from vehicles like the Ford F-150 Lightning and the Tesla Cybertruck, the Rivian R1S seems to be hitting the sweet spot for some buyers. There are also very few direct competitors to the R1S, or at least few that can match the large Rivian SUV’s unique blend of tech and real off-road prowess.
