Rivian R2 expansion receives approval from Normal Town Council

Rivian’s expansion plan for R2 production was on the Normal Town Council’s agenda on August 19, 2024. The Council approved Rivian’s expansion plan, which will add around 1.3 million square feet to the automaker’s factory.

Rivian’s expansion plan was almost unanimously approved. Mayor Chris Koos was absent during the August 19 Council meeting and did not vote on the agenda item. 

“Approval of the proposed Amended Site Plan would support Rivian’s expansion by permitting the construction of additional employee parking lots, various building additions, new wayfinding signs, and a new building for the R2 vehicle. 

“This will support the Comprehensive Plan’s Economic Vitality and Health and Sustainability goals as the expansion will create more jobs in the electric vehicle manufacturing sector,” said the Council’s report on Rivian’s expansion. 

Enumerated below are Rivian’s proposed amendments to its site plan.

• New “R2” Building - A 1.14 million square foot building will be built east of the main Rivian plant. 
• Additional new Buildings - Rivian plans to build additional new buildings that will cover 208,000 square feet in the southeast portion of the current site. The new building would increase Rivian’s site size by 5%. The new building will connect to the new R2 building. 
• Additional Parking Spaces.- Rivian proposed four new parking areas, including a few dedicated spaces for employees. The parking facilities include spaces for bicycles. Rivian also plans to create an inventory lot in the northeast portion of its Normal, Illinois, site. 
• Wayfinding signs - Rivian wants to add 5 vehicular directional signs and 1 gate to facilitate safer and more efficient vehicular traffic.
