Rivian owners listed the basic amenities all electric vehicle (EV) charging stations should offer. Some items on the list seem like common sense but are nowhere to be found at a few too many EV charging stations.
Restrooms are the first amenity—and probably the most important—on the list. Internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle owners might be surprised to know that quite a number of EV charging stations do offer access to public restrooms. A few Rivian forum members pointed out that restrooms are an essential amenity to have access to, especially when on road trips with children.
“Sometimes you do have to get ‘resourceful’ to find a restroom. I have used a charging station (EA) at a bank before, and as everyone knows, banks aren’t exactly known for public restrooms,” noted Rivian Forum member ads75.
“I walked a couple blocks away and used a restroom at a public library. Glad it was open when I got there. And I fully agree it wasn’t exactly convenient, probably even less so for those with kids. Unfortunately, I didn’t find any easy lunch options at that stop either,” ads75 added.
Automakers and other businesses have started investing in charging stalls as more drivers turn to EVs. Unlike gas stations, EV charging stalls have been installed in more convenient places, like mall parking lots, banks, and other areas where drivers congregate. However, due to some of the more unique areas EV charging stalls are installed, there might be little room to build a restroom.
Another Rivian owner pointed out that restrooms might be too expensive to build and maintain. Some businesses have opted to build charging stalls but little else.
Other basic amenities Rivian owners think EV charging stations should offer are shade during the day, well-lit areas at night, and trash bins. A few mentioned that shopping centers, food options, and entertainment would be some excellent amenities to offer as well.
