Rivian Owners Are Absolutely Loving Their R1's Spatial Audio/Dolby Atmos Support

Rivian’s rollout of Apple Music’s premium, immersive Spatial Audio with support for Dolby Atmos to its fleet of vehicles was not done with much fanfare. In typical Rivian fashion, the upgraded audio features were released through an over-the-air software update. A few social media posts and a straightforward blog post on the company’s official website also announced the new features. 

A look at social media shows that the upgrade was anything but minor. Since its release earlier this month, Rivian’s Apple Music support for Spatial Audio and Dolby Atmos has received rave reviews from R1 owners, with many stating that their vehicles now sound ridiculously good. Some have gone so far as to state that they will might end up breaking their R1 vehicles because they are playing music so much. 

Owners across social media platforms like X and groups like the Rivian Forums have stated that the inclusion of Spatial Audio and Dolby Atmos effectively changed the limits of what they perceive a vehicle’s sound system could be like. This is quite impressive, especially considering that a good number of Rivian owners today are used to great audio quality from luxury vehicles or premium EVs like Teslas. 

Perhaps the secret lies in the fact that Rivian actually worked closely with Apple to ensure that Spatial Audio and Dolby Atmos are properly supported in R1 vehicles. This was highlighted by Wassym Bensaid, Rivian’s Chief Software Officer, in the electric truck maker’s press release. 

“We care deeply about bringing a seamless, top sound quality experience. Thanks to this significant technical collaboration with Apple’s engineers, our vehicles offer an incredible audio entertainment experience that enhances the daily adventures of Rivian customers,” Bensaid said. 

While all Rivian vehicles now have native access to Apple Music thanks to the company’s recent software update, it should be noted that Spatial Audio and Dolby Atmos support is available in all Gen 1 R1T and R1S, as well as Gen 2 R1 vehicles with Rivian Premium Audio. Streaming Apple Music tracks also requires a Connect+ subscription, which costs $14.99 a month or $149.99 annually.
