Rivian R1T Successfully Completes The Mint 400

The Rivian R1T has made history as the first electric vehicle to complete The Mint 400, a grueling desert race held in the foothills of Las Vegas, Nevada. The accomplishment was celebrated by Rivian on its official social media pages. 

“Rivian recently became the first EV to cross the finish line of The Mint 400, a wild off-road race through the desert foothills outside Las Vegas that for decades has inspired not just automotive and racing fans but novels, movies, and more. Congrats to our team of test engineers who made it happen!” Rivian wrote in its post. 

The electric vehicle maker included several photos of the R1T that was used during the event. As could be seen in images posted by the company on social media, the R1T that was utilized for The Mint 400 looked mostly stock. Of course, Rivian used professional drivers for the event, but The Mint 400 is absolutely no joke. 

The Mint 400, also called “The Great American Off-Road Race,” is the oldest and most prestigious off-road race in America. The event started in 1967, and it quickly grew so popular that it attracted racing legends like Al Unser, Mickey Thompson and Steve McQueen. 

The Mint 400 is held every March. Being a multi-day event, it features a massive vehicle parade down the Las Vegas Strip, a one-day festival on Fremont Street, and two brutal days of desert racing around a treacherous 400-mile desert course. As noted by Speedhunters, the race is so challenging that typically, fewer than 50% of the teams that compete in The Mint 400 cross the finish line. 

Such a distance and such conditions may seem like a nightmare for electric vehicles, but the Rivian R1T survived it just fine. The R1T is a tough vehicle, after all, and it is built to conquer the most difficult terrains available. Based on Rivian’s social media post, it looked like the R1T was right at home in The Mint 400.
