Rivian NACS-Compatible Wall Charger Likely In The Works
Speculations from the electric vehicle community have suggested that Rivian is working on an updated wall charger that features a North American charging standard (NACS) plug. Comments from a Rivian representative suggest that such a product is indeed in development.
Earlier this month, Rivian community members on social media claimed that the electric truck maker would likely release a NACS Wall Charger as soon as the company starts rolling out vehicles that are equipped with a native NACS port. These speculations were warmly received by the electric vehicle community, especially since Rivian already has access to NACS-compatible Tesla Superchargers today.
When we asked Rivian if it was indeed coming up with a NACS-compatible Wall Charger, a representative from the company highlighted that Rivian is in the process of transitioning its R1 fleet to native NACS in the future, and that upcoming vehicles like the R2 and R3 will come with NACS ports by default. With this in mind, the representative noted that it is likely "that we will also offer a NACS Wall Charger for these vehicles."
While the Rivian representative's comments are not a direct confirmation that a NACS-compatible Wall Charger is indeed in the works, the development of such a product makes perfect sense. It would now be interesting to see if the company's own Rivian Adventure Network would eventually transition to NACS as well, especially when mass-market vehicles like the R2 are released.
The North American Charging Standard allows non-Tesla electric vehicles to access NACS-compatible Supercharger stalls. As per Tesla, there are currently over 15,000 NACS-compatible Superchargers that are accessible to Rivian and Ford electric vehicle owners today. Coupled with the Rivian Adventure Network, Tesla's Supercharger effectively allows the R1T and R1S to travel anywhere in North America.
