Rivian developing Launch Mode for Gen 1 Quad-Motor R1 vehicles

Comments from Rivian’s official social media account on X have revealed that the company is coming up with a dedicated Launch Mode feature for Quad-motor R1 vehicles. Such a feature would be a welcome addition to the first generation R1T and R1S, as Launch Mode provides dopamine on tap for Rivian drivers. 

One of the best things about the Rivian ownership experience is the continuous software improvements being rolled out to the company’s vehicles. This is true even for Gen 1 R1 vehicles, which continue to receive new features and functions with every software release. 

This was certainly the case when Rivian announced the release of software version 2024.31 earlier this month. Similar to the electric truck maker’s other updates, the version 2024.31 release includes a number of quality of life improvements, such as a nifty safety feature for owners’ furry (or scaly or feathered) friends, and a dedicated Launch Mode for Gen 2 tri-motor R1 vehicles. 

Rivian outlined some of these improvements in a post on social media platform X. As per Rivian, update 2024.31 includes customized interior lighting features for Gen 1 R1 vehicles, enhanced Google Maps search, improved traffic data and trip previews, and location photos with Connect+. New fan speed options in Auto mode + Pet Comfort limit were also lowered to 63°F.  

More importantly, Rivian also announced that it was rolling out a Launch Mode feature for its Tri-Motor Gen 2 R1 vehicles. The feature is undoubtedly neat, so it was no surprise that EV fans promptly asked Rivian if a similar feature would also be rolled out to Gen 1 Quad-motor vehicles. Rivian confirmed that such a feature is indeed in development.“We’re working on it,” Rivian wrote.  

As per Rivian, Launch Mode provides maximum off-the-line acceleration and increased top speed, along with race stats for 0-60 mph and quarter-mile race times. Engaging the feature is pretty straightforward, as users only need to go to Drive Modes > Sport mode > and Launch. 

Rivian did not provide a strict timeframe for Launch Mode's release for Gen 1 Quad-motor R1 vehicles. That being said, the company has a pretty good track record when it comes to rolling out features for its vehicles, so it would not be surprising if Gen 1 Quad-Motor R1T and R1S units receive Launch Mode in the near future.
