Rivian update 2024.35.00 sparks talk about in-cabin cameras
Rivian update 2024.35.00’s Gear Guard Live Cam feature sparked talks about in-cabin cameras in R1T and R1S vehicles.
The R1 manufacturer enhanced Gear Guard by enabling live cameras supported by a Connect+ subscription. A few Rivian owners commented that Connect+ is more worth it with live cameras. Gear Guard Live Cam is available in Gen 1 and Gen 2 R1 vehicles.
“The system includes high-resolution cameras embedded around your vehicle, physical cables that secure your gear, and an attentive (but friendly) animation on the center display. With this update, you can now see what’s happening in and around your vehicle from almost anywhere, right from the palm of your hand through the Rivian mobile app,” noted Rivian.
While most—if not all—R1 owners have appreciated improvements to Gear Guard in Rivian update 2024.35.00, some pointed out one factor that could make it better.
“No internal cam to spy on my puppy while I run errands,” commented R1T owner HighVoltOverland in Rivian Forums.
A few Rivian R1 owners agreed with HighVoltOverland’s comment. Meanwhile, others pointed out that Rivian disabled Gen 1 vehicles’ in-cabin cameras and did not have any installed in Gen 2 vehicles.
While an interior camera would improve Gear Guard Live Cam’s function, it will probably take longer before Rivian rolls out such a feature. Interior camera features would require a hardware update for Gen 2 R2 vehicles, which may take time. It would be easier for Rivian to integrate interior cameras back into Gen 3 R1T and R1S builds and encourage customers to upgrade.
Besides Gear Guard Live Cam, Rivian update 2024.35 introduces tri-zone climate and new drive mode animations to Gen 1 and Gen 2 R1T and R1S vehicles. For Gen 2 vehicles, Rivian also rolled out an adaptive driving beam update.
