Rivian R3X to be Delivered Before Regular R3 Variants
Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe was recently featured in an episode of Decoder, where he discussed a number of key topics with The Verge Editor-in-Chief Nilay Patel. Among the most interesting topics he covered was Rivian’s release strategy for the R3, a smaller vehicle that is expected to be released after the R2 crossover SUV.
During his interview, RJ admitted that Rivian made some errors when it decided to unveil the R1T, R1S, and its electric commercial van at the same time. This, the CEO noted, resulted Rivian almost choking to death “trying to ingest that much complexity.” This is an error that Rivian does not intend to repeat with the R2, the R3, and R3X.
RJ did note that the R3 platform will be released with its top-tier model first, which means that the R3X will be preceding the regular R3 variants. The R3X will be launching after the company has mastered the R2 platform.

“So, what we’re doing with this new platform is we’re launching R2 first, allowing some time to get that stable, and then launching R3. I will say this: The first R3 that we’re launching, it’s going to start with R3X, and then we’ll bring in base R3 after R3X,” Scaringe noted.
The CEO also highlighted that Rivian is focusing on costs with its R2 and R3 platforms. If the R2 and R3 succeed, Rivian could very well become a stable, profitable automaker similar to first movers in the EV industry like Tesla and BYD.
“There’s not a lot of decisions that we’re taking lightly. We’re looking at every inch of the vehicle and, in the case of R2 and R3, really, really focusing on costs. So that, out of the gate, they have a much better cost structure than what we launched with on R1 so that we can get to scaled profitability and healthy, positive free cash flow,” Scaringe said.
