Rivian R2 vs Jeep Recon EV: Battle of the Affordable Adventure SUVs

Recent sightings of the Jeep Recon EV sparked interest in the upcoming all-electric SUV, even among Rivian owners. The Jeep Recon EV will likely compete with the Rivian R2.

Both electric SUVs will be made for outdoor adventures at more affordable prices. As such, some customers may be considering whether they should pull the trigger sooner on the 2025 Jeep Recon EV or wait until the Rivian R2 comes out in 2026.

2026 Rivian R2

The Rivian R2 SUV deliveries will start after the 2025 Jeep Recon EV sales launch. Manufacturing might not be an issue when it comes to Rivian customers. Quite a few Rivian customers have stayed loyal and firm on their orders in the past. Plus, Rivian has learned a lot about manufacturing since R1 sales started.

Jeep—and its parent company Stellantis—might be on par with Rivian in manufacturing. Although, Rivian's focus on electric vehicle manufacturing might give it a slight edge.

The Rivian R2 is estimated to have a range of 300+ miles. It is expected to run 0 to 60 mph in under 3 seconds. The Rivian R2 will also have a NACS charge port enabling drivers to access Tesla's expansive Supercharger Network.

The Rivian R2 is expected to start at $45,000, which might entice some customers. Rivian is expected to pack the R2 SUV with features similar to the R1T and R1S. Besides the price, the R2's technological features might lead customers to wait for Rivian's affordable SUV versus the 2025 Jeep Recon EV.

2025 Jeep Recon EV

According to Stellantis, the 2025 Jeep Recon EV is made for extreme outdoor adventures "in near silence." The upcoming all-electric SUV will be a 100% Jeep 4x4 and 100% zero-emission vehicle.

When the 2025 Jeep Recon EV was announced, Stellantis said it would have the features listed below:

  • True trail-rated capability with Jeep Selec-Terrain traction management system, e-locker axle technology, under-body protection, tow hooks and aggressive off-road tires
  • Authentic Jeep open-air freedom with a one-touch powertop, removable doors and glass
  • The latest generation Uconnect system, including detailed travel guides of the most notable off-road trails

Although Stellantis has not announced its official prices, the 2025 Jeep Recon EV is expected to start at $60,000. The price might go up to $79,000, depending on the trim and options. Car and Driver believes that the Jeep Recon EV will be more expensive than the gasoline Jeep Wrangler and will follow the Wrangler's trim structure.

The 2025 Jeep Recon EV has gained some attention from Rivian owners. Some R1T and R1S owners were pleasantly surprised by the Jeep Recon EVs design as it reminds them of a Defender or Land Cruiser.

While its design might be impressive, a few Rivian owners are focused more on the Jeep Recon EV's range. As Jeep is just learning about electric vehicle's, there is some concern over the Recon EV's battery capacity and range—something Rivian would be intimately familiar with by now, thanks to R1T and R1S production.

"I am willing to bet the range on these won't be impressive. The platform looks shorter than the R2, so less room for a battery. The range might hit 300 EPA with the most efficient setup. That's not good enough for me. I love the removable roof and door options though. I really wish Rivian would reconsider bringing that idea back to the R2. Oh, well," commented Rivian Forum member Mike or mkhuffman.
