Rivian R1T becomes only pickup truck to earn IIHS' Top Safety Pick+ rating in 2024
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has listed the Rivian R1T as the only pickup truck that earned its coveted Top Safety Pick+ rating this 2024. This was despite the IIHS rolling out more stringent safety standards this year.
A look at the IIHS' safety ratings for its 2024 pickup trucks shows this. The Toyota Tundra, for example, was able to earn a Top Safety Pick+ rating last year, but thanks to the IIHS' stricter standards this 2024, the combustion-powered pickup truck was downgraded to a Top Safety Pick rating this year.
The Rivian R1T's safety scores in the IIHS' crash tests are extremely impressive, with the vehicle earning a "Good" rating—the highest score that the IIHS can give—on the small overlap front, moderate overlap front, and side crash tests. The vehicle's headlights and restraints also earned a "Good" rating. Only the Rivian R1T's front crash prevention system was given an "Acceptable" rating by the IIHS.
Overall, the Rivian R1T's crash test scores were close to being perfect, as noted in a CarBuzz report. The vehicle earned "Good" ratings in almost every category except for driver leg/foot injury measures in the updated moderate overlap front crash test and rear passenger head protection in the updated side crash test. In these tests, the Rivian R1T earned an "Acceptable" rating.
