Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe has no plans to license Tesla Full Self-Driving (FSD) system: report

A recent report has emerged stating that Rivian does not have any plans to license Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) system for its vehicles. The update was reportedly shared by Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe at Morgan Stanley’s 12th Annual Laguna Conference.

As noted in a RivianTrackr report, Scaringe reportedly explained during the Morgan Stanley event that Rivian is developing its own AI-powered autonomous driving system. By doing this, Rivian would be able to focus on tailoring its self-driving suite specifically for its lineup of vehicles. Rivian should also be able to develop a self-driving system that perfectly optimizes its vehicles’ comfort, performance, and safety.

The Rivian Autonomy Platform uses a combination of 11 high-resolution exterior cameras, 12 ultrasonic sensors, 4 corner radars and 1 forward radar, and a driver-facing camera, as per the company’s official website. These sensors help Rivian's Driver+ perform tasks such as automatic steering, braking, and acceleration, to name a few.

Tesla has mentioned in the past that some OEMs have expressed an interest in licensing FSD for their vehicles. Tesla’sapproach to autonomy is quite different, as it only uses cameras and artificial intelligence to operate the vehicle. This allows for the optimization of costs, but it also requires an immense amount of training data. Tesla, for its part, has noted that it was open to the idea of licensing FSD to other carmakers.

During the TSLA Q1 2024 earnings call, CEO Elon Musk explained that even if Tesla secures an FSD deal with another automaker, it might be a while before the market sees a non-Tesla vehicle running the advanced driver-assist system. "I just want to also point out that they take a lot of time in their product life cycle. They're talking about years before they will put it in their product. We might have a licensing deal earlier than that, but it takes a while,Musk said.
