Rivian ranked dead last in Consumer Reports' predicted reliability rankings

While respondents of Consumer Reports' 2024 Annual Auto Surveys gave Rivian the highest owner satisfaction score among automakers in the study—with 86% of R1T and R1S owners stating that they would buy another Rivian—the magazine still ranked the electric truck maker dead last when it came to predicted reliability.

Jake Fisher, senior director of auto testing at Consumer Reports, shared his thoughts about why reliability matters to car buyers. "While brand rankings can guide you to the showroom, it is critical to also look at reliability for specific models before making a purchase decision. Even within high-ranking companies, there can be significant variation in reliability," he stated.

To calculate predicted reliability, Consumer Reports used data from its annual reliability surveys, which asked members about problems that they have encountered with their vehicles. This year, this data was gathered from more than 300,000 vehicles from the 2000 to 2024 model years, as well as some from the 2025 model year. A total of 20 trouble areas were studied, from squeaky brakes and broken interior trim to charging problems and transmission issues.

Based on its survey, Consumer Reports ranked Rivian dead last in its predicted reliability rankings with a score of just 14 out of 100. In contrast, Consumer Reports ranked Subaru, Lexus, and Toyota as the brands with the highest predicted reliability, with scores of 68, 65, and 62, respectively. Fellow EV maker Tesla also received a low score from the magazine with a score of 36 out of 100.

As per Consumer Reports, "Among EVs, the reliability of the Rivian R1S and R1T, along with the Ford F-150 Lightning, is below- or well-below average. Both the R1T and Lightning are entering their fourth year of production yet have had poor reliability since they first went on sale."

Steven Elek, who oversees auto data analytics at Consumer Reports, shared some thoughts about the predicted reliability of EVs. "Since EV technology is still relatively new, automakers continue to work the bugs out of their powertrains and platforms. But we also see issues with their non-EV components, such as the latest infotainment and electronic features," Elek noted.
