Confirmed: Rivian R2 Charge Port Moved To Driver's Side, Making It Perfect For Tesla Superchargers
Rivian has confirmed that the R2's charge port would be moved to the driver's side when the all-electric vehicle enters production. The information was confirmed by a Rivian representative through email.
The Rivian R2 recently started its tour of several US and Canada cities, which will last well into 2025. The R2's first stop was at a Rivian Space in Pasadena, where it attracted a good number of electric vehicle enthusiasts. It did not take long before reports from the event's attendees emerged suggesting that the R2's charge port would be moved to the driver's side. Posts about the update were shared on the Rivian Forums, as well as on social media platforms such as X.
We can now confirm these reports. As per a Rivian representative, "the charge port will be located on rear driver's side of R2." The Rivian representative also noted that the company is looking forward to "sharing more info and specs on R2 in the future." Considering these comments, it seems safe to assume that the R3 and the R3X would also have their charge ports moved on the driver's side when they enter production.
When the Rivian R2 was unveiled on March, EV enthusiasts quickly pointed out that the vehicle had its NACS port on the wrong side. As per attendees of the event, Rivian reportedly noted that it was counting on the future to be curbside charging. The company reportedly also adopted the stance that Tesla should not dictate a vehicle's charge port location.
Numerous EV enthusiasts on social media begged to differ, and Tesla Cybertruck Lead Engineer Wes Morrill also advised Rivian to reconsider the R2's charge port location. The Tesla Lead Engineer noted that the R2's charge port "location will forever doom all Rivian owners to be the jerk taking two spots at a Tesla charger."
"I know the Rivian Network has been installed to support the front left/rear right, but there are <500 Adventure Network fast charge handles vs more than 50,000 Supercharger handles. You've done the right thing for customers moving to NACS. Take it the last mile and put it in a location that works seamlessly with existing infrastructure. Can be the front right if you are trying to optimize for street parking. Looking forward to charging harmoniously with a great-looking EV," the Tesla Lead Engineer wrote in a post on X.
Rivian is one of two automakers whose vehicles currently have access to Tesla's NACS-capable Supercharger Network. Tesla's Superchargers, coupled with Rivian's own Adventure Network, enable R1 owners to pretty much travel everywhere without any problems.
