Rivian addresses potential excessive cabin noise issue for R1T and R1S
Rivian has launched a technical service bulletin for some model year 2022-2024 R1T and R1S vehicles that may be experiencing excessive cabin noise from their vehicles’ A/C compressors.
As noted by Rivian in its technical service bulletin, the cabin noise from the R1T and R1S’ A/C compressor might be distracting for longtime electric vehicle users. The company explained that such noises are actually typical in combustion-powered cars—they just typically get covered up by the sounds and vibrations of an internal combustion engine.
Rivian noted that customers who complain about their R1T or R1S’ excessive cabin noise when their vehicle’s A/C is running could have the issue fixed. To address the issue, Rivian would be retrofitting brackets on the R1T/R1S' A/C lines, and, if necessary, reroute a harness to reduce noise and vibration in the cabin.
It should be noted that the Rivian R1T/R1S’ A/C cabin noise from the vehicle’s A/C compressor is not a safety issue. As per Rivian, even vehicles with excessive noise in their cabins are operating normally. If any, the cabin noise is something that simply could affect the comfort of the R1T and R1S.
Rivian is not the only electric vehicle maker whose vehicles could have cabin noise issues. The Tesla Model 3 is a best-selling electric car, but its early editions also suffered from excessive cabin noise. A lot of this was simply due to electric vehicles being so quiet that even minor sounds become noticeable. Tesla would later address these issues by fitting the Model 3 with double paned glass, which improved the all-electric sedan’s cabin noise.
