Rivian and Volkswagen Group joint venture officially launches

Rivian and the Volkswagen Group’s joint venture has been officially launched. The announcement for the joint venture's launch, named “Rivian and VW Group Technology, LLC,” was posted in a press release. 

As noted in a press release, the joint venture will have a total deal size of $5.8 billion, and it is expected to start November 13, 2024. Through the joint venture, Rivian and the Volkswagen Group plan to bring next-generation electrical architecture and best-in-class software technology for both companies’ future electric vehicles.

The joint venture is expected to tap into both companies’ expertise, particularly Rivian’s industry-leading software and electrical hardware technology and the Volkswagen Group’s global scale. 

Rivian and VW Group Technology, LLC will be headed by Wassym Bensaid from Rivian and Carsten Helbing from the Volkswagen Group. The joint venture will be based in Palo Alto, CA to start, though three other sites are in development in North America and Europe.

Executives from Rivian and Volkswagen have shared their optimism about the joint venture. As per RJ Scaringe, Founder and CEO of Rivian, the company is “thrilled to see our technology being integrated in vehicles outside of Rivian, and we’re excited for the future.” 

“The JV will aim to use the existing Rivian electrical architecture and software technology stack, enabling the launch of Rivian’s R2 in the first half of 2026 and support the expected launch of the first models from the Volkswagen Group as early as 2027,” Scaringe said. 

Oliver Blume, CEO of Volkswagen Group, for his part, noted that “the partnership with Rivian is the next logical step in our software strategy.” 

“Today’s launch of the joint venture demonstrates the potential we want to leverage together in the coming years. We have a clear plan to offer our customers the best products and digital experiences at attractive prices through state-of-the-art development processes, innovative technological approaches, and a competitive cost base driven by synergies,” Blume noted.
