Rivian R2 software changes that might go to R1 EVs

The recent unveiling of the Rivian R2 pickup truck generated excitement not only for its design but also for its potential software advancements. Below we discuss some intriguing software changes from the R2 that might trickle down to existing or upcoming Rivian R1 electric vehicles (EVs).

"There's also a bunch of new-looking software," noted Marques Browlee while checking out the R2 with Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe. "So this is a software UI (user interface) refresh that R2 is going to see. R1 owners will also get a lot of this stuff, which is this new sort of almost kinda of art style for the car."

The R2 boasts a refreshed UI with a focus on rounded elements. The new UI could translate into a sleeker, more intuitive user experience for Rivian R1 drivers. Additionally, the R2's instrument cluster features a new UI, which could offer a more streamlined display of essential driving data in R1 vehicles.

Rivian's R2 software also reimagines the music screen with controls positioned on the left side, closer to the driver for easier access. Similarly, the charging screen features a new charge graph similar to the one found on the Rivian mobile app—from the latest update. The new charge graph provides a more visual representation of a Rivian vehicle's charging status, which might be useful in R1 EVs.

The R2 introduces a dedicated Drive Modes screen with new toggle buttons for Ride, Regen, and Stability. Rivian's new Drive Modes screen might be a more user-friendly way for R1 drivers to manage their driving experience.

Additionally, the R2 showcases innovative scrolling reels with software-defined haptics in the steering wheel. This technology could enhance the control and feedback R1 drivers receive through the steering wheel when switching through Drive Modes or simply controlling speaker volume.

"We developed it entirely in-house…all the electronics to give it that software-defined haptics. We've been really wanting to create this amazing scrolling experience," Scaringe said about the R2's scrolling wheels.

Alex from AutoBuyersG discussed a few of the software update Rivian has planned for the R2 and that might make it to R1 EVs. Most Rivian R1 owners seem pleased with the potential software updates and physical changes to the infotainment system. However, some were skeptical that Rivian would implement the software updates to R1 EVs.

Based on Rivian's goals for 2024, the company is eager to enhance its customers' experiences with the R1 lineup and future vehicles. Next month, the company will halt R1 production at its factory in Normal, Illinois. The Normal Factory shutdown would give Rivian time to revamp R1 vehicles, including the lineup's software.
