Rivian R2 renders tease electric SUV’s design

Rivian R2 renders posted online provided a closer look at the new electric SUV’s overall design.

Rivan supporters are bubbling with excitement as the company prepares for the Rivian R2 unveiling event. The company plans to reveal the all-electric SUV on March 7 at 10 am PST.

Rivian Forum member Midnight Rivian posted a few R2 renders online. The renders hint that the new Rivian vehicle will resemble the R1S with a glass roof and a more compact design.

Earlier this month, a Rivian R2 was reportedly spotted charging next to an R1S. The sighting revealed a Rivian vehicle close to the one in Midnight’s renders. However, the R2 sighting at Rivian’s Adventure Network seemed lower to the ground and longer than the one depicted in the render.

Midnight Rivian theorizes that the EV startup will push back R2 deliveries like it did with the R1T pickup truck. To play devil’s advocate, though, Rivian is more experienced now in production, so it may not put R2 customers through the same grueling process as R1T reservation holders.

Rivian will open R2 SUV reservations during its unveiling event in March. Reservation deposits will be refundable. The company has not announced the official price, specifications, or delivery time for the Rivian R2.

Last year, Rivian’s Chief Financial Officer Claire McDonough estimated that the R2 SUV could cost between $40,000 and $60,000. The company’s CEO, RJ Scaringe, previously stated that R2 vehicles will qualify for the Inflation Reduction Act’s (IRA) electric vehicle tax incentives.

Earlier this month, Rivian cut the prices of the base R1T and R1S, bringing the cost down to $71,700 and $76,700, respectively. The R1 price cuts are likely in preparation for the R2.
