Rivian R1T to be deployed by Atlanta Fire Rescue Department (AFRD)
The Atlanta Fire Rescue Department (AFRD) is deploying Rivian R1T all-electric pickup trucks as part of its emergency response fleet. The Rivian R1T units are expected to pave the way for emergency personnel to respond to emergencies quicker.
In a comment to Atlanta News First, Fire Chief Rod Smith noted that the Rivian R1Ts could be beneficial since they are smaller than the AFRD’s fire trucks. The Rivian R1Ts will be staffed by paramedics instead of firefighters. Smith noted that the R1T pickup trucks should be able to help emergency personnel reach their destinations within minutes.
“Traffic is not getting any better anytime soon, we know that fire trucks are not getting any smaller, so we looked to find something a little smaller, a little more nimble that can make its way through the city streets,” the French Chief stated.
The AFRD receives numerous calls for help on a regular basis. Between July and September alone, AFRD crews were dispatched to 14,056 emergency medical service calls. From these, EMS calls made up 63% of AFRD’s total calls for the third quarter of 2024.
The Rivian R1T pickup trucks were acquired as part of a $3 million “Fleet Forward” campaign by the Atlanta Fire Rescue Foundation. Smith also noted that Atlanta is in the process of purchasing an electric fire engine as well. It should also be noted that the two Rivian R1T pickup trucks will serve the entire city.
“Our goal has always been to be the industry leaders and we’re willing to try some things to see what works. We want to make sure that they continue to have that confidence in us. And if they call us, just know that we are coming,” Smith stated.
