Confirmed: Rivian Gen 2 R1 Vehicles No Longer Ship With Physical Keyfobs
Observations from the Rivian community indicate that Gen 2 R1T and R1S vehicles are now being delivered with no physical key fob. The apparent update was understandable since Rivian's phone key and KeyCard work really well. However, some Rivian customers were left a bit confused as to why their Gen 2 R1 vehicle did not include a physical key at all.
Stories of Rivian's missing key fob for its Gen 2 R1 vehicles were shared in online forums such as the r/Rivian subreddit. Some of the subreddit's members stated that they have been informed that a physical key fob would be a paid accessory for Gen 2 R1 owners later on. We contacted Rivian about the matter, and we were able to confirm that physical key fobs are not included in Gen 2 R1 vehicles.
"Gen 2 R1 vehicles come standard with a KeyCard and Rivian Mobile App access," a Rivian representative said. The Rivian representative also confirmed that "there will be a key fob available down the road for Gen 2 R1 owners via Gear Shop."
Physical key fobs are still very useful, especially for drivers who take their Rivian out into the wilderness. Smartphones could easily run out of batteries, and while the Rivian KeyCard is IP69-rated, it takes one bad fall for the card to be damaged. Rivian's key fob, which is made from anodized aluminum and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), is simply the most durable tool available that can unlock an R1T or R1S.
Interestingly enough, Rivian owners have shared complaints about the Gen 1 R1T and R1S' physical key fobs, with some drivers stating that the key fob's battery tends to run out fast. Others also claimed that their Rivian key fob tends to have issues with proximity unlocking at times. With this in mind, Rivian may be working on a next-generation key fob that addresses all the issues that owners have observed in the item's original iteration.
Of course, if Rivian releases a next-generation key fob, Gen 2 R1 owners would have to purchase it as a paid accessory from the Gear Shop.
