Investigation underway after fatal Rivian R1T crash in Mt. Lemmon, AZ
An investigation is now underway following a fatal accident involving a Rivian R1T that drove off the road leading up to Mt. Lemmon in Arizona.
As noted in a report from KGUN9 Tuscon, Pima County Sheriff's deputies responded to reports of a traffic incident on North General Hitchcock Highway, close to Milepost 9 just before 9:30 a.m on November 8. When authorities arrived at the scene, they saw a 2023 Rivian R1T at the bottom of an embankment.
As per reports about the incident, the 2023 Rivian R1T appears to have broken through a guardrail and plunged down a steep embankment. The driver, who was identified as Orion Sherry, was pronounced dead at the scene. Sherry had reportedly been driving his R1T recklessly on the highway before he drove off the road.

Images of the crash were shared on the r/Tuscon subreddit. As can be seen in the images, it appears that the R1T had rolled several times as it plunged down the embankment. All the airbags of the all-electric pickup truck seemed to have engaged during the incident as well.
Comments from members of the r/Tuscon subreddit have suggested that aggressive drivers are a notable issue in the Mt. Lemmon area. As per u/lokicoyote1, the speed limit on the Mt. Lemmon area is mostly 35 mph, but a good number of drivers seem to ignore this and drive much faster. This, unfortunately, makes the roads less safe for everyone else.
"This happened to me a couple weeks ago on Mt Lemmon. Going down and was behind a cyclist who was easily decending at 30mph plus. Some douche in a giant SUV passes the entire line and nearly hits oncoming traffic," u/SquallyZ06 wrote in a comment.
