2025 Rivian R1T Gen 2 arrives at IIHS Vehicle Research Center for safety tests
The Rivian R1T is a very tough and safe vehicle, so much so that the 2024 R1T became the only pickup truck that earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) Top Safety Pick+ rating. Based on a recent post from the IIHS on its official account on X, it is now the 2025 Rivian R1T’s turn to face the music.
As per the IIHS on its post, the 2025 Rivian R1T, also known in the electric vehicle community as the Gen 2 R1T, has arrived at the institute's Vehicle Research Center. The all-electric pickup truck would be subjected to crash tests and several other evaluations at the site.
“The 2025 Rivian R1T has arrived at the Vehicle Research Center for an upcoming crash test in the updated moderate overlap configuration,” the IIHS wrote in its post.

Expectations are high for the Gen 2 R1T to perform very well in the IIHS’ updated crash tests, considering that the previous generation 2024 R1T performed excellently despite the institute's more stringent safety standards. This was the reason why the 2024 Rivian R1T became quite literally the only pickup truck to maintain its IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating in 2024.
Other pickup trucks that previously had a Top Safety Pick+ rating, such as the Toyota Tundra, were downgraded to a Top Safety Pick rating in the IIHS’ 2024 crash tests and safety evaluations.
During its tests, the 2024 Rivian R1T earned a "Good" rating—the highest score that the IIHS can give—on the small overlap front, moderate overlap front, and side crash tests. The all-electric pickup truck’s headlights and restraints also earned a "Good" rating. Only the Rivian R1T's front crash prevention system was given an "Acceptable" rating by the IIHS.
